Team, The U.S. Census Bureau announced that seven states will lose congressional seats, including California, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and my home state of Michigan. What does this mean? Cook Political Report is estimating that Republicans will pick up 3.5 seats from this reapportionment alone — which means Future Forum members like me just found out that our fight to win re-election will be that much more tough, so we have to start preparing now. One less seat in Congress means less representation and fewer resources for states. But in states like my own with Republican-led state legislatures, it also means the GOP has greater flexibility to gerrymander new districts. Future Forum members believe that voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around — which is why we’re fighting in Congress to pass redistricting reform.
