Matt Gaetz has constantly distinguished himself as one of the cruelest, most craven politicians in Washington. Now, he's under investigation for allegedly paying minors for sex, and he's proving just how low he'll go as he tries to defend himself.
Last weekend, Gaetz was speaking at a Republican event in Ohio when he compared sex trafficking with the congressional earmarking process:
“I'm being falsely accused of exchanging money for naughty favors. Yet, Congress has reinstituted a process that legalizes the corrupt act of exchanging money for favors, through earmarks, and everybody knows that that's the corruption.”
The audacity of Gaetz to compare congressional procedure with a vile, illegal practice like sex trafficking is shocking but not wholly unexpected from this despicable Trump-loyalist. Given any opportunity to take the high road, Gaetz inevitably goes low. He is one of the purest examples of the opportunism, xenophobia, and moral corruption that has defined the Republican Party since the rise of Trump.
The worst part? After Gaetz finished his speech, the crowd gave him a standing ovation and stayed to take selfies with him.
It's clear that the radical right Republican base will never hold him accountable for his actions. Democrats are going to have to beat him at the ballot box if we want to rid American politics of Matt Gaetz.
