I refuse to let Republicans downplay the events of that day.

On January 6th, Donald Trump incited a mob of insurrectionists to storm the Capitol in a violent attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power to now President Joe Biden.

The insurrectionists beat and tased Capitol Police officers and five people died.

Yet just yesterday, Mitch McConnell stood on the Senate floor announcing he will outright oppose a bipartisan commission to investigate the horrific events of that day and hold those involved accountable.

Folks, I was there on January 6th. The insurrection we experienced was an attack on our Capitol and the many people who serve our country in the halls of Congress — from elected leaders and their staff, to members of the press, to Capitol Police officers.

What happened on January 6th was also an assault on our democracy itself.

I refuse to let the Republican Party downplay that day and abscond responsibility.

I will do everything in my power to make sure the Senate moves forward with this independent commission and holds everyone who had a role in inciting the insurrection accountable.

Thank you for joining me in standing up for our democracy.
