I can’t believe I have to say this, folks —

Yes, of course we need a January 6th Commission to investigate the insurrection that took place at the Capitol earlier this year. And yesterday, the House voted to create this commission, with 35 Republicans joining Democrats to pass the measure.

But Mitch McConnell announced that he’s opposed to this proposal for a bipartisan commission — a measure that needs 60 votes to pass.

For months, Donald Trump peddled lies and conspiracy theories claiming the presidential election was rigged. On January 6th, he incited right-wing rioters to invade the Capitol and demand Congress overturn the results of a democratically-held election.

It’s deeply concerning that McConnell and other Trump Republicans would oppose an effort to uncover the truth about this insurrection and don’t want to face responsibility for their actions.

The January 6th insurrection gave us a renewed sense of how fragile our democracy truly is, and it reminded us that we have a responsibility to protect our republic. It is the work of our lifetime.

That is why I fully support the creation of a bipartisan January 6th Commission to uncover the truth and ensure nothing like the January 6th insurrection ever happens again. I hope my Republican colleagues join me.

Thank you,

Michael
