Dear Friend,
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month — a powerful and important opportunity to celebrate AAPI history and culture.
But this AAPI Heritage Month, we must also commit ourselves to eradicating hate against people of the AAPI community. The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism has found that reports of anti-Asian hate crimes have risen 164 percent in 2021, compared to the same period last year.
No one — not Asian Americans, not African Americans, not Muslims, not Jews, not LGBTQ folks, not immigrants — should live in fear because of who they are. We must do everything we can to combat hate crimes.
That’s why last month I called on Congress to pass critical legislation to help fight hate crimes. I was so pleased to see President Biden sign that bill into law today. This legislation will help us find better ways to confront hate.
To my AAPI constituents, friends, and coworkers, I stand with you. I will keep fighting for you.
Best,
Josh
