John, January 6, 2021. A day that I will never forget. The Capitol was looted. Lives were lost. Our democracy was attacked. But we are finally heading towards some accountability. Yesterday, my colleagues and I voted to assemble a commission to investigate the January 6th Capitol riot.
The attack on the Capitol was not an isolated incident. Trump's lies and four years of hateful rhetoric played out and cost people their lives. We must hold the rioters and those who incited the violence accountable for their role in the insurrection and domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol. We cannot allow obstructionist Republicans to brush this horrific day under the rug. This bipartisan commission — similar to the one that examined the 9/11 attacks — will consist of 10 experts who will investigate the cause of the attack, the security shortcomings, and intelligence information leading up to the insurrection. It’s a critical step in the fight to hold the insurgents accountable and defend our democracy. We can’t let those responsible get away with their actions, and this is the first step in the fight for accountability. Onwards! Chuy García |
