Right now, investors are at the forefront of tackling the climate crisis, making commitments and setting plans to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.
To help investors manage the financial risks and opportunities posed by the climate crisis, Ceres and other founding partners of The Investor Agenda have developed The Investor Climate Action Plans (ICAPs) Expectations Ladder and Guidance, which provides investors with clear expectations for issuing and implementing comprehensive climate action plans to support a net-zero emissions economy by 2050 or sooner. The framework aims to help investors navigate existing expectations and initiatives on climate change regardless of where they are on their climate journey.
The release of the ICAPs Expectations Ladder and Guidance
comes amid increasing global momentum of investors committing to work with their portfolio companies and policymakers to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner as well as interim targets by 2030.
Investors can use the ICAPs Expectations Ladder to understand the specific climate actions they can take to strengthen their approach and make further progress. The framework is designed to help investors:
Assess their current approach to managing climate risk and opportunity
Develop their own investor climate action plans
Embed elements of the framework into their climate change strategies and disclosures
Communicate their current activities and future plans to stakeholders
Ceres and our partners at The Investor Agenda will measure progress on how many investors are developing and implementing climate action plans aligned with the Expectations Ladder. We will work to ensure that at least 50% of all major investors will issue an ICAP or incorporate elements of the Expectations Ladder into their plans, reports and strategies in the next year and that all major investors have an ICAP with net-zero targets in the next 5 years.
Read more about how investors can develop climate action plans wherever they are on their climate journey
in my latest blog on Ceres.org.
If we are going to successfully mitigate the harmful and costly effects of the climate crisis and pursue a transition to a just, sustainable and prosperous net-zero economy, investors must lead the way.
