There’s too much damn stuff

Hi Revealer,

When we built our first Reveal Reporting Network in the summer of 2018, we were hoping to fix a problem that’s endemic to investigative reporting: There’s too much damn stuff.

Faced with mountains of data, documents, tips and other information, our reporters routinely confront a daunting task before they even start writing. In order to craft a coherent investigation, they have to make strategic decisions about what information to include and what to omit.

As a result, worthwhile stories often go untold.

That’s where our Reveal Reporting Networks ([link removed]) come in. As our reporters plug away on their text and radio stories, I work alongside them, building infrastructure to ensure that their excess materials land on the desks of more than 1,100 local reporters we’ve recruited from across the U.S. We first piloted this approach three years ago in response to a deluge of tips about work-based rehabs. Since then, it’s become a critical collaborative tool for investigating workplace injuries in Amazon warehouses, rape clearance rates and more.

Our latest network ([link removed]) , launched in early May, was particularly ambitious. We offered up for analysis the entire trove of data that informed our groundbreaking investigation ([link removed]) into Paycheck Protection Program loan disparities. We hosted in-depth trainings with members of the network and penned how-to guides for interpreting our materials. Reporters in Detroit ([link removed]) ; San Diego ([link removed]) ; Oakland ([link removed]) , California
([link removed]) ; and Green Bay, Wisconsin ([link removed]) , already are delivering localized versions of our national story, ensuring that we’re reaching affected communities and driving change. More great work is on the way.

But it doesn’t happen without your support ([link removed]) .
As a nonprofit news organization, we’re powered by our members. While supplies last, if you donate at least $50 ([link removed]) , we’ll send you a copy of In/Vulnerable ([link removed]) , our award-winning comic book. Through gorgeous illustrations by Thi Bui ([link removed]) , we explore stories about both the ordinary and the extraordinary experiences of living through a pandemic: stories about Black Lives Matter rallies, Zoom school, luxury bunkers and more. I encourage you to donate and get your copy before we run out.

Through your generosity, we are able to share stories that need to be told. Together, we can hold the powerful accountable – in major cities, small towns and everywhere in between. Thank you.
