Friend,

I once described Donald Trump as an out-of-control tornado. He wreaked havoc on our country through his very last weeks in the Oval Office, which were marked by further destruction to federal agencies and craven attempts to protect himself, family, and other political cronies from prosecution for their corruption.

Now – despite Trump's best efforts to avoid accountability – MSNBC reports that the New York Attorney General has opened a criminal investigation into the Trump Organization.

While the former president may have been the worst offender when it came to advancing corruption, chaos, attacks on democratic norms, and violence on our very Capitol in recent years, Donald Trump clearly did not act alone. There were plenty of enablers in his orbit: Rudy Giuliani – who we've just learned is under federal investigation as we speak. The Trump children. Stephen Miller. The list goes on and on.

Our democratic institutions withstood critical tests – but we must ensure our democracy is strengthened, not weakened. And that begins with holding those who abused their power accountable.

That's why I've put together a petition urging accountability for Trump administration officials who committed wrongdoings – because we cannot protect and strengthen our democracy unless those who damaged it are brought to justice.

I'm hoping to gather 1,000 signatures before midnight tonight, so I'm asking you now: Will you add your name if you believe Trump administration officials should be held accountable for corruption and abuses of power?

We must never forget that for four years we endured a presidency that saw itself above the law. The abuses of power – and the multitude of attempts to abuse power – were astonishing.

But leaving an administration is not a "Get Out of Jail Free" card. What will it say about our democracy if those who committed egregious actions during Trump's time in office are faced with zero consequences? What precedent will it set for the right-wing extremists that are in government right now, walking the halls of Congress?

It's up to us to ensure further damage isn't done. So please, before midnight tonight I am counting on you to add your name to this important petition: Sign on now to hold Trump administration officials accountable for abuses of power.

Thank you for speaking out.

Dick
