Hi John,
As countries in the global south face second and third waves with little or no access to vaccines, at least nine people have become new billionaires since the beginning of the pandemic, thanks to excessive profits pharmaceutical corporations are making on vaccines.

Between them, the nine new billionaires have a combined net wealth of $19.3 billion, enough to fully vaccinate all people in low-income countries 1.3 times. Meanwhile, these countries have received only 0.2 per cent of the global supply of vaccines, because of the massive shortfall in available doses.

Pharmaceutical monopolies have enabled these individuals to generate massive wealth for themselves from vaccines that were largely public funded.

The world now has new vaccine billionaires while totally failing to vaccinate the billions who desperately need to be safe. These billionaires are the human face of the huge profits that many pharmaceutical corporations are making from the monopoly they hold on these vaccines.

As the G20 meets tomorrow for a global health summit, help us build pressure for a global solution that involves ending vaccine monopolies so that the world can mobilse as many factories as possible to make the quantities the world needs.

We need governments to support the proposal to suspend patents and force pharmaceutical corporations to share their know-how and technology so the world can get doses to billions of people in the global south rather than creating vaccine billionaires.
