Welcome to Thursday, May 20th, animals, vegetables, and minerals...

Thirty-five Republicans joined Democrats Wednesday in passing legislation to create a bipartisan, independent commission to investigate the January 6th Capitol riot. ([link removed])

The 35 GOP lawmakers who voted “yea” on forming the commission is an increase from the 10 who voted in favor of former President Donald Trump’s impeachment earlier this year for what they contend is his role in the incitement of the riot.

** McConnell's Opposition to Jan. 6 Commission
------------------------------------------------------------

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has announced his opposition to the House-passed bipartisan ([link removed]) plan to create a 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

McConnell criticized the bill - co-sponsored by Mississippi Democrat Bennie Thompson and New York Republican John Katko - as "slanted and unbalanced." He also pointed to ongoing law enforcement investigations and arrests and claimed a commission would result in duplicative efforts.

"So there is, has been and there will continue to be no shortage, no shortage of robust investigations by two separate branches of the federal government. So ... it's not at all clear what new facts or additional investigation yet another commission could actually lay on top of existing efforts by law enforcement and Congress. The facts have come out, and they'll continue to come out."

** Congress Considers Anti-Asian Hate
------------------------------------------------------------

The House Wednesday passed a Simple Resolution condemning the March 16th Atlanta Spa Shootings and reaffirming its commitment to combat anti-AAPI hate.

H.Res. 275 ([link removed]) passed 244-180, with more than a dozen Republicans arguing that it was premature to label the Atlanta shooting a hate crime.

“Today, my colleagues have brought forth a resolution that I believe is laced with political jabs,” Rep. Jodey Arrington, (R-TX), said on the House floor.

“It seems to be a veiled criticism of President Trump. And [the resolution] needlessly politicizes this horrible tragedy, it is inappropriate, and I believe it is unwise for Congress to presume a motive in the middle of an ongoing investigation.”

Georgia Democrats had defended the resolution. Rep. Hank Johnson said that the measure “puts the House on record, condemning the racist shootings in Atlanta. That’s what it does, that’s all it does.”

“Atlanta and the South are no stranger to white folks utilizing violence to terrorize and harm communities of color,” Johnson said.

“But even though the city’s past and present are marred with white supremacy, Atlanta is also a city too busy to hate. It’s a city that continues to be a catalyst for progress and triumph.”
