Dear John,
We have a crisis on our hands: Of the 10 top-performing link posts on Facebook in the U.S. Monday, eight came from sources of far-right extremism like Franklin Graham, Ben Shapiro, and Fox News.
Zero came from progressive accounts. Zero.
On Friday it was even worse. Ten out of 10 of the top-performing link posts on Facebook were all by pro-Trump conspiracy mongers. Every single one of them.
The right wing already dominates on talk radio. And new TV ratings show that of the top five cable news shows, four of them are aired on Fox News. No show on CNN even cracked the top 15. Now they’re taking over social media, including YouTube and Facebook, and using their influence to spread wild lies and dangerous conspiracy theories across the country.
We have a plan to stop them, which I’ll tell you more about below. But first, will you rush a donation right now to beat back the right-wing disinformation machine?
The only way we can beat back far-right lies is to confront them in real time on the platforms where they spread.
That's why the team here at Inequality Media has worked to build one of the largest audiences on social media of any progressive group--and one of the few platforms able to go toe-to-toe with the Ben Shapiros and Tucker Carlsons of the world.
And now we’re embarking on a bold and ambitious project: We’re targeting conservatives in purple counties across the country with fact-based content to beat back right-wing misinformation.
And it’s working.
Our data show that viral videos combating money in politics are a whopping TEN times more effective than what we have typically seen in the past with videos on other topics. That means we have the opportunity to reach hundreds of thousands more conservatives with winning messages that directly confront the far right’s lies.
The bottom line is that we've spent years crafting and testing the most effective messages and content on social media. We know what works and what doesn't.
To ramp up our new initiative, we will need the resources to reach millions more people. Will you make a donation to help support Inequality Media to prepare to fight back against the wild conspiracy theories coming at us?
With your help, we’ll build up our following on social media and reach out directly to the millions of people that the right wing is targeting with lies and misinformation.
With careful and targeted precision, we’ll connect with conservatives and suburban women on Facebook and YouTube, and rural communities that are often targeted by extremists. We’ll work to understand where they’re coming from and create content that shows them why the far right’s looney lies make no sense.
And to increase our impact, we’ll use sophisticated data and analytics to determine which messages are the most effective at reaching our target audiences.
But this work isn’t easy, or cheap. And with more resources, we can do more research and outreach. So we need your help.
With our democracy on the line, will you chip in today to defeat right-wing lies?
Thank you for anything you can contribute today,
Robert Reich
