The January 6 insurrection was one of the darkest days in recent history for our country. But if you listen to House Republicans less than 5 months later, it was just another day in Congress.
Here's what Congressman Andrew Clyde of Georgia recently said during a hearing convened to understand what went so horribly wrong that day:
“You know, if you didn't know the TV footage was a video from January the 6th, you would actually think it was a normal tourist visit.”Anyone who saw the images and footage from that day knows that Rep. Clyde is lying through his teeth to serve the ends of the Republican Party. Admitting that the Trump rally-turned-riot was an attempt to overturn the election would mean admitting that the party needs to address the problem of conspiracy theories and violent behavior that pervades their base.
We've seen time and time again since January 6 that this is the approach Republicans will take. We cannot count on them to examine their actions even for a moment -- worse, we can expect that they will further the Big Lie and use it to pursue their own political ends.
If Democrats want to end the racism, xenophobia, and violence that the Trump years brought to our country, then we have to defeat the Republican Party at the ballot box.
