General strike in Palestine as thousands protested on Day of Action | Protests continue as Israel escalates war crimes

Photo of May 18 Day of Action demonstration in San Francisco, California.

Palestinians in occupied West Bank, Gaza, and inside Israel declared and observed a general strike on Tuesday, May 18, as thousands across the world responded to Palestine’s call for a day of action. Palestinians in occupied Palestine shut down all economic activity in an act of unity and collective resistance, in the midst of a new wave of global solidarity.

Protests were organized outside of Israeli embassies and elsewhere demanding an immediate cessation of the Israeli state’s bombardment of Gaza. As international outrage grows, Israel has escalated its brutal bombing campaign and war crimes, with the intent of inflicting maximum damage before a potential ceasefire is implemented. In the past week, Israel has killed over 220 Palestinians, 63 of whom were children. Over 1500 are wounded.

Cities—big and small—in the U.S. continue to demand an end to Israeli apartheid and the occupation of Palestine. Protestors called for the Biden administration to immediately end U.S. funding to apartheid Israel, and to end the immunity and protections afforded to Israel by the U.S. and international bodies that allow it to commit crimes with impunity.

More solidarity actions are set to take place over the course of this week and weekend in the United States and across the world.
