Over the past few years, the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters has supported incredible people and groups undertaking once-in-a-lifetime adventures to help protect the Boundary Waters from the threat of sulfide-ore copper mining. This kind of “Adventure Advocacy” is a unique way to raise awareness about protecting this precious Wilderness while having an epic adventure.

A new fantastic adventure is coming up this weekend - Saturday, May 22. Alex Falconer, Government Relations Director at the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, will attempt to set a record by running a 110-mile nonstop journey through the heart of the Boundary Waters Wilderness to help raise awareness about the issue of protecting it from the threat of toxic sulfide-ore copper mining.

This journey will connect the Border Route (BRT) and Kekekabic (Kek) Trails in the first known attempt to run them continuously. Learn more and take action here.

In addition to Alex’s Running for the Boundary Waters project, people have biked, swam, paddled, and more to raise awareness for protecting the Wilderness. 

In 2014, Dave and Amy Freeman paddled and sailed on a 101-day, 2,000-mile journey from Ely, Minnesota, to Washington, D.C., to call attention to a proposed sulfide-ore copper mining operation threatening the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Not to mention, in 2016, the Freemans lived for 366 days consecutively in the Boundary Waters - calling the project “A Year in the Wilderness.”

In 2015, three dedicated young women: Erin, Iggy, and Lisa (Lisa now works on Save the Boundary Waters science and policy team!) -- wilderness guides from Voyageur Outward Bound School near Ely -- biked 850 miles over 39 (towing a signature canoe) days across Minnesota to raise awareness about the threat to the Boundary Waters' clean water, clean air, and forest landscape from proposed sulfide-ore copper mining on its wilderness edge.
