Friend,
Our collective power is making a real difference and forcing Amazon to examine its role in high-tech policing.Â
Yesterday, Amazon announced it would extend its moratorium on police use of facial recognition. This is our people's win—not corporate goodwill.Â
The work doesn’t stop here. This extension is still only temporary. Will you help us keep up the momentum for a permanent ban?Â
The moratorium extension is the result of ongoing organizing we’ve lead as Team #MediaJustice and as a proud member of the Athena Coalition fighting to be free from surveillance capitalism.
Since Amazon first announced a moratorium following the murder of George Floyd and subsequent uprisings last summer, nearly 200 Black people have been killed by police.Â
Amazon has supplied the tools— from Ring to Rekognition to Amazon Web Services (AWS)—for law enforcement to create a surveillance state that continues to harm our communities.Â
“Until further notice” isn't the same as "total ban." There are still unmet demands on the table, so our #EyesOnAmazon week of action will keep advancing this fight until all are met.
We're keeping up the momentum from this win by pushing ahead with our Week of Action Monday, June 7 – Friday, June 11. We need YOU to break this partnership once and for all.Â
Here are 3 ways you can support the #EyesOnAmazon campaign.Â
- DONATE to MediaJustice to make sure we have the resources to keep holding Amazon accountable. Even $10 goes far, and is the most direct way to affect change!
- RSVP for the Week of Action (June 7 — June 11) to make sure you get reminders and the latest updates.Â
- SIGN the Petition to tell Amazon it's #PrimeTime to stop policing us.Â
In Solidarity,Â
