In a 50-50 Senate, there’s no room for error. We’ve got to hold every single seat that we have while we fight to expand our majority.

Right now, my colleagues who are up for reelection this cycle are building out their campaigns, and those who are in seats usually perceived as “safe” can’t show any signs that they could be vulnerable.

That includes my friend from Washington state, Senator Patty Murray. She is a fantastic progressive and leader in the Senate who just launched her re-election campaign this week.

I’ll explain more in a moment, but if you’re able to, will you split a $5 donation between her re-election and my efforts to help Democrats hold and expand the Senate majority? It would mean a lot to both of us.

Patty got her start in politics as a grassroots activist. One day, while fighting to save her kids’ preschool program at the Washington state capitol, a male legislator told her that she couldn’t make a difference because she was “just a mom in tennis shoes.”

It became a driving force for her to prove him wrong. She organized 13,000 parents and won that fight, and she hasn’t stopped advocating for children and working families since. In the Senate, she helped lead the fight to pass the American Rescue Plan — delivering relief for families across the nation despite unanimous Republican opposition. She’s also been a tireless ally to our movement to change our gun laws and keep our communities safe.

She’s someone we need in the Senate. But the truth is, even to run in what pundits perceive as a “safe state,” you’ve got to raise millions of dollars. It’s absolutely sickening to me, but the grassroots movement we’ve built together is helping us change how that money is raised — and in turn, how our politics works.
