Gainey topples Peduto in primary, will be Pittsburgh’s first Black mayor barring a November challenge

“One person can’t change a city. A city is changed with all of us," State Rep. Ed Gainey said after his victory Tuesday. "A city is changed when we all come together to improve the quality of life for everybody. That’s why I ran for mayor.”

Mayor Bill Peduto conceded at about 10:30 p.m. As of 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, Gainey had about 46% of votes to Peduto's 39% with 98% of precincts reporting.
