After Rep. Paul Cook’s retirement in CA-08, a swarm of Republicans instantly threw their hat into the race against Chris Bubser. One of them was far-right ideologue Jay Obernolte who appears to be the most formidable of the bunch.

Jay is about as far-right as they come. He’s best known for being a climate science denier, anti-vaxxer, and staunchly opposes women’s reproductive rights.

The truth is, a few years ago that may have been a winning formula in this community. But things are changing in CA-08. And they’re changing fast.

The registration gap bet ween Republicans and Democrats in CA-08 has narrowed to only 4% over the last year. That’s an even slimmer margin than Democrats overcame in numerous California House races in 2018.
