Stacey Abrams' run for Georgia's governor taught the Democratic Party an important lesson: The power Democratic governors can have in red states should not be overlooked.
The recent wave of voter suppression bills from Georgia, Texas, and Florida would have had a much lower chance of passing if the states had Democratic governors. Democratic governors in states with red legislatures like Gretchen Whitmer, Andy Beshear, and Tony Evers are the difference between disenfranchised voters and everyone's voice being heard in our democractic process.
The GOP has gerrymandered each “red state” to ensure they stay in power. It's time for Democrats to focus on the ultimate check on the GOP's abuse of power: Our governors. Organizing Democratic gubernatorial campaigns across the country will prove successful when Democrats like you turn out in 2022. In this moment, laying the groundwork for successful campaigns is critical, especially in states with red legislatures where Democrats have been gerrymandered out of majorities.
We have a campaign to organize for three gubernatorial elections in red states in 2022. But as of now, we are $3,000 short of our goal to finance this campaign. If these races are lost, three more states could have egregious voter suppression laws passed like we saw in GA, TX, and FL.
