The day before the certification of the Electoral College results on January 6, I warned against a “wildly anti-democratic moment we will witness on the Floor of the U.S. House of Representatives tomorrow.”

I was referring to the Republican objectors who would violate their oaths to the Constitution by undermining the validity of the 2020 election. Meanwhile, Donald Trump had a more sinister plan. He was preparing a speech that would incite an insurrection and shake our democracy to its core.

Donald Trump’s Big Lie incited an assault on our Capitol that was broadcast live for the entire world to see. And even in the shadow of this deadly attack, a majority of the Republican caucus pressed on with their objections to the certification of the election — only compounding the damage to our democracy.

Ever since January 6, the GOP has doubled down further.

They’ve continued to champion Trump’s Big Lie. They’ve purged Liz Cheney from their leadership for rejecting it. And now, Kevin McCarthy is attempting to shut down the bipartisan January 6 Commission to investigate this attack on our democracy. We can’t let that happen.

The House has a duty to investigate the events of January 6, expose the truth, and bring perpetrators to justice. Kevin McCarthy cannot stand in our way.
