First: Donald Trump fabricated a Big Lie about our elections and incited a deadly insurrection in the Capitol to stay in power.

Then: A lone Republican, Liz Cheney, publicly spoke out against Trump and the Big Lie, telling Republicans: “Our freedom only survives if we protect it. Today we face a threat America has never seen before. A former president … risks inciting further violence.”

Now: Kevin McCarthy and the rest of the GOP have voted to purge Cheney, the third highest ranking Republican in the House, from her leadership post.

Liz Cheney's right -- and we don't say that often. Our democracy will only survive if we protect it. But Democratic grassroots giving has continued to plummet while far-right extremists and Trump enablers like Kevin McCarthy are breaking fundraising records.

If we continue at this rate, we'll never be able to catch up. That means that by next year, Kevin McCarthy will control the House -- and Senate Grim Reaper Mitch McConnell will be back at his post.
