Nancy Kaufman, RN, MS, FAAN, who led national tobacco policy and advocacy initiatives as vice president of programs at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has died. As a tribute to Kaufman notes, she was a “health care professional for over 50 years, dedicating her entire career to population health, public policy, and the profession of nursing.”
Report Pays Homage to Nurses, Points Way to Bright Future
On May 11, the National Academy of Medicine released The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity
. Among recommendations in the long-awaited report, writes Susan Reinhard, PhD, RN, FAAN, chief strategist at the Center to Champion Nursing in America, are increasing diversity;
adding social determinants of health to curricula; and—critical to patients and nurses alike—supporting the well-being of nurses. The report is dedicated to nurses who lost their lives in caring for those with COVID-19.
Report: Nursing Must Be Aggressive in Making Education More Inclusive
Reimagine nursing schools, says the new report from the National Academy of Medicine: It’s not enough to tinker at the edges. A closer look at the NAM’s recommendations on education shows the study committee’s belief that marginal improvements in education of this key part of the health care workforce will not be enough to realize the goal of health equity. NAM Report Hails School Nurses, Eyes Them for Bigger Role
In summer 2019, Robin Cogan, MEd, RN, NCSN, addressed the Future of Nursing study committee about the scope and scale of school nursing. Now Cogan writes about the results on the Relentless School Nurse blog: “‘School nurse’ is listed 87 times and ‘school nursing’ is mentioned 27 times in the groundbreaking report!” Quality counts too, of course: The report urges that budgets support school nurses as key to addressing social needs.

Nursing Innovations Fund 2021 Now Open to Action Coalitions
The Campaign for Action's Nursing Innovations Fund has rewarded inspiration for three years and is going on a fourth. Examples of Action Coalition proposals that have been rewarded include projects that support the wellness of Filipino communities; encouraging nurse entrepreneurs; and addressing the mental health needs of farmers. Deadline for the new round of funds focused on improving health equity is June 30.

New - 2021 Nurse Corps Scholarship Program Deadline Extended
The U.S. Department and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration has extended its deadline for the Nurse Corps Scholarship Program, which provides financial support to students enrolled in nursing degree programs in exchange for a commitment to serve in high-need areas across the country. New deadline: May 26 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
New - J&J Challenge Grant Focus: Improve Access to Care
Johnson & Johnson invites nurses and students to submit their nurse-led novel concepts, protocols, treatment approaches, and consumer product ideas with the potential to help improve access to care amid the pandemic environment and beyond. Winners receive up to $100,000 and mentoring from J&J. The Nurses Innovate QuickFire Challenge deadline is August 6.
The National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs seeks, and will fund, six organizations to each host a regional event that focuses on ideas and initiatives that create and support person-centered, integrated systems of care. Selected organizations will receive $5,000, and subject matter and logistical support. Deadline to apply: May 19.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Systems for Action program seeks proposals to measure the impact of collaborations across the nation’s fragmented medical, social, and public health systems—partnerships that allow organizations to better share in the costs, benefits, and influence that govern these initiatives. Grants are available for research to evaluate solutions. Deadline: June 9.
The American Nurses Association has issued its annual call for nominations for appointed positions, along with a list of the boards and committees with openings. Among the seven groups seeking people’s time and attention are the committees on the Minority Fellowship Program, on bylaws, and on nursing practice standards. Deadline: June 23.
RWJF Funds Pioneering Ideas: Exploring the Future to Build a Culture of Health
