Pittsburghers need the mobility and opportunity that come from public transit. There are lots of things that The City of Pittsburgh and the Mayor’s administration can do to support Port Authority and equitable transit-oriented development. From policies to prioritize affordable housing, to equitable investments in infrastructure, to dedicated staff time, the future Mayor of Pittsburgh needs to be a champion for public transit.

Public testifiers agree: Port Authority's new fare changes leave out riders most in need.

Port Authority must extend emergency fare relief to low-income riders and increase CONNECT card access.

Last month Port Authority proposed three changes to their fare policy:

  1. Free transfers for riders using ConnectCard stored-value
  2. To Shift Weekly & Monthly passes to 7 & 31-day passes that start on the day you tap them instead of by the calendar-based schedule.
  3. To Increase the ConnectCard stored-value fare to $2.75

But dozens of public testifiers and even the Editorial Board of the Post-Gazette used the 40-day public comment period to let the Port Authority know that their changes need to go further.

With the state's transportation funding bill set to expire in 12 months, and with politicians being open for new proposals, now is the time to put forward a progressive vision for how expanded public transit can save our state.

Transit equity will not be real until riders have convinced leaders at all levels of government to step up. PPT has been organizing with riders across our city, state and country for expanded transit funding and to advance our climate justice needs.

Grassroots advocacy was essential in securing $60+ billion for public transit in federal COVID relief bills. Now we need to organize to ensure that this relief money is spent transparently and equitably, and that our federal tax money is investing in transit service, not highways.

PPT Coordinating Committee Election Season 2021: Nominate Fellow Organizers to Lead PPT!

Each July, PPT members vote for leaders to fill seats on PPT's 5-11 member Coordinating Committee. Coordinating Committee Members serve a 2-year term.

We are now accepting nominations for leaders to guide us through the next phase of our organizing. All PPT members who have participated with PPT in the last 6-months can run for the Coordinating Committee. Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQ People, People with Disabilities, Immigrants, Womxn, and Youth nominations are strongly encouraged.
