Friend –

Last month, H.R. 40 – a bill that would establish a commission of experts to not only study the history and the impact of slavery and racial discrimination, but also make recommendations for reparations to Congress – was voted out of the House Judiciary Committee. With your help, it can advance to the floor.

This is historic and long overdue, and we must do all we can right now to move this forward.

Please take action with us by telling your representative to support H.R. 40 now.

ACLU Supporter, the scars created by hundreds of years of chattel slavery and racially discriminatory government policies are deep. Black people's lives and human dignity were denied across civic life for centuries in its wake – from criminal justice, to economic justice, to voting rights.

In fact, we're still feeling the after-effects in 2021: Police brutality cuts hundreds of Black lives short every year. Hundreds of thousands of people are trapped in the mass incarceration system. And COVID-19 has hit hardest in many Black communities.

In order to start the process of reconciliation, we must fully understand the impact of the institution of slavery and its legacy. It's time our government establishes a commission to study reparations and recommend reparatory policies and actions to Congress.

Together, let's make sure this happens: Send a message to Congress in support of H.R. 40 today.
