Hey John — we emailed you a few months ago about the Trump Administration’s buzzer-beater decision to open up protected acreage in the National Petroleum Reserve for fossil fuel extraction (see below).

This midnight policy change would’ve put ecologically sensitive areas within our nation’s largest block of public land at risk. But we have good news! Former SEEC member Secretary Deb Haaland has revoked the move.

Secretary Haaland said that the order to expand drilling in the National Petroleum Reserve, among other sites, “unfairly tilted the balance of public land and ocean management toward extractive uses without regard for climate change, equity, or community engagement.”

This win, spearheaded by a former member of SEEC, can and must help us build momentum toward other policy victories in the Arctic — like the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. But not without your help. Will you fuel additional green victories by rushing a donation today?

Subject: UPDATE on Trump’s drilling spree in Alaska

Team,

As if it wasn’t enough for Donald Trump to begin officially leasing off the Arctic Refuge (ANWR) – he’s opening up MORE land in Alaska for oil drilling.

With a week to go until President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, Trump’s Bureau of Land Management has opened 18.6 million acres in Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve for fossil fuel extraction.

The Reserve is the nation's largest single block of public land. Drilling is currently allowed within the Reserve, but about half of the 23.5 million-acre reserve was protected, ensuring the safety of natural resources and wildlife.

Trump’s plan would drastically expand drilling across the Reserve, putting ecologically sensitive areas at risk.

The Reserve is a valuable habitat for polar bears and other animals. It is home to Teshekpuk Lake, a unique, wildlife-rich wetland wilderness that serves as a crucial breeding area for migratory birds and calving grounds for roaming caribou.

Experts warn that Trump’s administration’s plan allows drillers to get dangerously close to these important areas. Even at a distance, infrastructure like roads and well pads could alter the flow of water and the movement of animals to and from Teshekpuk Lake.

Trump is on a drilling spree in his final weeks in office, racing to open up millions of additional acres of pristine Alaskan wilderness for drilling in addition to the dangerous work he is doing in the ANWR.

SEEC members are working in Congress to oppose these rules, and this work won’t stop on Inauguration Day – they’ll diligently comb through Trump’s policies to put an end to this anti-environment era.

Please consider making a recurring donation to SEEC PAC today to secure your ongoing support of this critical work. We’ll be busy protecting our pro-environment majority ahead of 2022 AND clearing out Trump’s “legacy” – it’s all hands on deck!

Thank you,

– SEEC PAC

Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
