Dear John,
As you know, there is an immense amount of policy work to be done by the Biden team to reverse the damage the Trump administration inflicted on human rights and human dignities. Perhaps no one area more so than at our southern border. The situation there continues to be both urgent and grave, so I am writing to you today to share an update on our work as well as to ask for your support.
The Biden administration is, thankfully, not separating families at the border, nor are they expelling Central American minors back to Mexico alone. This, of course, is perhaps the bare minimum they can do to restore human dignities for those who arrive at our southern border seeking safety and shelter. They are also moving to end the policy of "Remain in Mexico" (MPP), though we would like to see that process move more quickly.
It goes without saying that is merely the tip of the iceberg. Our time, energy, and resources are needed now more than ever to help support and push the new administration not simply away from recent trends but forward on a path to justice. This path will be paved by the generosity of our loyal donors like you. I hope you’ll make your most generous gift today.
If there’s one message that I think is important to impart here, it is that the WOLA team and I believe that progressive policies that are rooted in human rights for those who come to the United States seeking shelter and opportunity are achievable. We, as a nation and government, can help the teenage boy from Honduras who fled gang violence in his hometown… we can help the Mexican family who lost everything to the extreme corruption in their village.
WOLA has been a part of some of the most important conversations in the past three months, and we must continue to do so. With your support, we will maintain our presence of being the voice in the Zoom room that does not let policymakers forget about the rights to basic human dignities that everyone should be afforded. Please make a gift right now so that we can continue to carry the message of human rights that I know is so important to you as well.
In solidarity,
Geoff Thale
President of WOLA
