Hi John - Zeziah, age 4, loves learning and playing with her friends at the Save the Children Head Start program she attends in Louisiana. While the pandemic was tough for kids like Zeziah, kids going to Head Start programs were lucky. Staff in our nation’s 1,600 Head Start and Early Head Start programs put in heroic extra efforts to ensure they could keep kids learning while staying safe. Because of their work, Head Start was recognized by the Centers for Disease Control for its ability to successfully operate in person while mitigating COVID-19 spread. But now Head Start is going to need our support more than ever to help kids get over the trauma caused by the pandemic – many kids lost family members or saw their parents lose their jobs. Tell your members of Congress – we need to boost funding for Head Start to provide at-risk kids the emotional and educational support they need to thrive! For 56 years, Head Start has been an essential program to help children living in poverty succeed in school and in life. But even before the pandemic, funding for Head Start didn’t come close to meeting the need. Head Start reached only 36% of eligible 3 and 4 year olds, while Early Head Start reached just 11% of eligible infants and toddlers. Our nation must do better to help children have a strong start on their educational journey. Send a message to your members of Congress – we must support at-risk kids by supporting Head Start! Thank you for being a voice for kids, |
