Welcome to Tuesday, May 18th, nations...

President Joe Biden expressed his support for a ceasefire to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as fighting between Israel and Hamas enters its second week.

“The president reiterated his firm support for Israel’s right to defend itself against indiscriminate rocket attacks. The president welcomed efforts to address intercommunal violence and to bring calm to Jerusalem,” according to a White House readout of the call.

More than 3,000 Hamas-launched rockets have bombarded Israeli cities.

On Sunday, Israel carried out the deadliest strike in the ongoing conflict, leveling several homes in the Gaza Strip and killing 42 people.

Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly will meet Thursday "in light of the gravity of the situation and its rapid deterioration."

** Supreme Court to Hear Mississippi Abortion Case
------------------------------------------------------------

The Supreme Court announced Monday that it will consider a case involving pre-viability abortions this fall, which could reshape the Court’s precedent surrounding abortions.

Known as Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, the case concerns Mississippi’s ban on elective abortions more than 15 weeks into pregnancy except in cases of medical emergencies and severe fetal abnormalities.

Mississippi enacted the Gestational Age Act in 2018, although a district court judge blocked it shortly thereafter and appeals have been unsuccessful to date.

Specifically, the Court will consider: “Whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortions are unconstitutional.”

This will be the first abortion case to be argued before SCOTUS since Justice Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed, handing conservatives a 6-3 majority. It could potentially provide a pathway to challenging Roe v. Wade and allow outright bans on abortion.

** Bipartisan Commission to Investigate Capitol Riot
------------------------------------------------------------

The Democratic and Republican leaders of the House Homeland Security Committee have announced an agreement over legislation to create a bipartisan commission tasked with investigating the attack at the Capitol on January 6th and recommending security improvements.

The bill, which is being drafted by Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Ranking Member John Katko (R-NY), is expected to get a vote on the House floor this week.

Modeled on the 9/11 Commission, this one would have 10 members with significant expertise in law enforcement, civil rights, civil liberties, privacy, intelligence, and cybersecurity.

The commission proposed by the bill would also have the authority to issue subpoenas to obtain information for its investigation if there is an agreement between the chair and vice-chair or a vote by a majority of commission members.
