The video is sickening: The head of the National Rifle Association shoots a suffering elephant several times, from just steps away. Taken in 2013, the footage brings home what we know in our hearts — elephants shouldn't be killed for cheap thrills and bragging rights.

And they deserve far better than death at the hands of people like Wayne LaPierre.

So we're doing all we can to stop trophy-hunt imports of elephants and other imperiled species.

Africa's savanna elephants are family-oriented, deeply intelligent animals who work together to locate food and water and care for their young. They've also just been declared endangered by the IUCN.

Yet trophies from incompetent, brutal killings of these sensitive creatures — like LaPierre's — can still flow into the United States, highlighting how our federal policies support the colonialist practice of killing imperiled animals in other countries, then carting their body parts back to show off on walls and floors.

Savanna elephant populations have plunged 50% over the past 75 years. They shouldn't be gunned down for fun.

So we're urging the Biden administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect elephants by banning these trophy hunt imports.

We're living through a heartbreaking extinction crisis, losing a species almost every hour.

Policies that allow or expand the killing of imperiled wildlife must be fought at every turn.

We're in court to restore Endangered Species Act protection to wolves across the lower 48 — and fighting back against states like Idaho, whose idea of wolf "management" is to kill them by the thousands.

We're working in Minnesota to save Canada lynx from being trapped out of existence because officials aren’t doing enough to protect them.

We need to save the precious wildlife we share our landscapes with, not kill them for pelts or to hang in living rooms.
