Hi everyone,

At our March General Meeting, we voted to join a campaign to reallocate funds from NOPD toward the creation of a Non Police Crisis Response Team. This campaign is now named Help Not Handcuffs! Our first major event in this campaign will be a campaign specific canvassing training this Tuesday, May 18th @ 6 PM held online that you can register for here!

From our coalition partners and comrades at OPPRC:

"In a city where jailing away structural problems has taken priority over addressing residents’ basic human needs, the option of a safe alternative to calling law enforcement for mental health emergencies is past due. By pushing for a crisis response unit that is specially trained to respond to mental health emergencies in place of NOPD, we can make sure our neighbors in crisis can call for medically-certified help that doesn’t involve the use of a taser or gun. The time to put our resources towards supporting trained professionals who will help us solve a mental health crisis with a stethoscope instead of handcuffs is now."

Our chapter's Local Convention is also fast approaching. Here are some important dates to keep in mind:

May 29th: Proposals Due

Submit your bylaw amendments, political resolutions, and electoral endorsements to [email protected] by May 29th (deadline has been extended!) @ 11:59 PM
June 5th: Amendments to Proposals and Nominations for Chapter Leadership Due

Submit any amendments to your comrades’ proposals to [email protected] by June 5th @ 11:59 PM
Submit nominations for Chapter leadership and for chapter delegates to [email protected] by June 5th @ 11:59 PM. No one may nominate themselves.

Solidarity,

DSA New Orleans Local Council

P.S. New to DSA? Check out our chapter's new member resources here. You can also always email [email protected] with questions about how to get involved or about the work our chapter is doing. And if you're interested in joining our chapter's Slack, email [email protected].

Or not yet a member? The most important tool that the working class has is organization. We're strong when we fight together. We have to build a durable, mass political organization to wield the kind of power we need to win real change in our society. If you aren't a dues-paying member of DSA yet, join here!

P.P.S. One of our members is working on organizing her neighbors in opposition to some new construction on her block. If you're in the Bywater and interested in getting connected with her, email [email protected] and we'll patch you through.

Help Not Handcuffs Canvass Training

Join us for a ‘Help Not Handcuffs’ virtual canvassing training led by our coalition partners, Orleans Parish Prison Reform Coalition (OPPRC) to learn about this public safety issue and how to safely and effectively provide community outreach and canvassing in YOUR community.

Canvassing and outreach are critical in raising public awareness about the ‘Help Not Handcuffs’ campaign and community meetings to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to participate and share thoughts on reimagining public safety with non-police crisis response teams. In turn, this will also allow us to center the voices and lived experiences of those most affected by the mishandling of emergency and mental health crisis response in the city.

Your time and support will bring us one step closer to building a crisis response team that will minimize trauma and provide adequate resources to our most vulnerable neighbors. We can’t wait to meet you!
