As you may know, the U.S. Department of Education is accepting public comment on two new proposed grant priorities ([link removed]) for the department’s American History and Civics Education programs.

The American history grant priority would be for projects that “incorporate racially, ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse perspectives into teaching and learning.” The second proposed priority would focus on promoting information literacy skills. The proposal notes that “civics education can be an opportunity to help students develop the skills necessary to meaningfully participate in our democracy and distinguish fact from misinformation.”

These proposed priorities come at a time when there is mounting opposition to anti-bias, anti-racist and truthful curriculum. As a program deeply committed to robust teaching about democratic values, the truthful history of our nation’s past and the systemic oppression related to it all, we believe these proposed priorities could help support educators in their commitments to culturally responsive and honest teaching.

The opposition to these values is loud; we want the support to be even louder. We hope you’ll take the time to voice your support as educators ([link removed]) for these funding priorities by this Wednesday’s deadline.
