Hi friend --

It is a quintessentially American idea that government should be a marketplace of different ideas and that the policies we enact are the product of hard-fought compromises that bring out the best in everyone. However, the overwhelming evidence now makes it painfully clear that our system of government no longer works that way.

In a new piece in the Washington Post, Eugene Robinson makes the case:

“The greatest threat to our nation's future is ... the Republican Party's attempt to seize and hold power by offering voters the seductive choice of rejecting inconvenient facts and basic logic. For the American experiment and people to survive, much less prosper, this iteration of the GOP must fail.”

This is the inescapable conclusion for anyone who has watched the Republican Party evolve since the formation of the Tea Party more than a decade ago. Slowly but surely, the GOP has morphed into a party of racists, far-right idealogues, and craven political opportunists.

Along that path, they've embraced public figures like Donald Trump who disdain the rule of law and the democratic bedrock of our country. Republicans have made it plain that they would throw away any pretense of respect for the laws of our country if it meant achieving their political ends.

Until the day that the Republican Party regains any sense of decency, we as Democrats have a duty to fight for and win every office we can. It's the only way to protect our country and build a future of prosperity and dignity for every American.
