Dear John,

EU citizens will no longer be locked up for failing to produce the right paperwork

After launching our open letter to the Home Secretary last week <[link removed]>, Best for Britain welcomes the news that the Home Office would no longer be detaining Europeans who did not have the correct paperwork for weeks in removal centres.

This is good news, and we will continue to fight for full transparency from the Home Office on this matter, and compensation for those detained. But many refugees and migrants still face dangerous and inhumane conditions in UK detention centres <[link removed]>, and the Government continues to push through draconian changes to the asylum seeking rules.

<[link removed]>

As always, it is the most vulnerable in our society who are hit first and worst by government oppression. However, we are all set be impacted by the Government’s attack on our civil liberties – the Policing Bill, voter ID, dismantling of checks and balances. <[link removed]>It’s an entire anti-democratic, anti-liberal agenda. And it’s up to all of us to fight.

Send a message to your MP, and call for the protection of the rights of all people on our shores. We must stand up for each other, and most importantly, for our right to hold our leaders to account. Send a message to your MP today.

Requiring voter ID is perhaps the most troubling of the Government’s raft of anti-democratic measures announced at last week’s Queen’s Speech.

The change in the law would affect all of the tens of millions of registered voters in Great Britain, but might only be effective in stopping a dozen complaints of fraud.

<[link removed]>

ID isn’t free. So, this would effectively act as a tax on voting <[link removed]>, and would disproportionately impact the less affluent.

We need more proportional, fairer voting systems, but the Government wants to reverse what little progress we’ve made in mayoral elections. As Parliament reopens, we must stop the Government rapidly passing legislation to make voting more difficult and less equal. We must make as much noise as possible.

High-profile Conservative figures like David Davis <[link removed]> and Ruth Davidson <[link removed]> have already harshly criticised the policy, so we can dial up the pressure on the Government. Whether your MP is a Conservative or in Opposition, let them know you won’t accept limitations on your democratic freedoms.

<[link removed]>Send a message <[link removed]>

The Government is systematically dismantling our hard-won freedoms, attacking our right to vote, our right to protest and our right to hold our leaders to account.

Don’t let them get what they want: a scared, inward-looking society, free of accountability and scrutiny. <[link removed]>

Best wishes,

Cary Mitchell,

Director of Operations, Best for Britain
