In just a moment, I’m going to ask you to chip in a few dollars to help re-elect my good friend Senator Patty Murray to the Senate. But first, I want to tell you about the kind of senator Patty is, and why we can’t take her race in Washington for granted — especially with our razor-thin 50-50 Senate majority.

Like so many of the moms who helped us take back the House in 2018, the White House in 2020, and the U.S. Senate this January, Patty’s political career started as a grassroots activist in her own community.

When a legislator told her she was just a “mom in tennis shoes” who couldn’t stop the state government from cutting their preschool budget, Patty set out to prove them wrong. She got in the fight on behalf of everyone dismissed by the political establishment by running for office herself.

Patty organized thousands and saved that preschool program, and won election to the School Board. Then the State Senate. Today, she proudly represents the people of Washington state in the other Washington — where we’ve made some amazing progress together.

We passed the American Rescue Plan to not only provide urgently needed pandemic relief, but implement forward-thinking policy like the expanded Child Tax Credit that will cut child poverty in half — and we did it without a single Republican vote.

And we’re just getting started. We’re working on even more bold legislation like the American Families Plan and the American Jobs Plan to help our country build back better.

But Mitch McConnell needs to flip just one seat to take back the Senate majority, undo our progress, and block all Senate legislation, which is why Patty’s race is so important.
