John -

In a moment I'm going to ask you to make a contribution to help launch our most ambitious fossil fuel finance campaign yet. It's something I don't usually ask you to do, but today I need to make an exception. I hope you'll let me explain:

Here at 350, we take on the fights that many folks in the climate movement believe cannot be won. Whether it is the Keystone XL fight, or divesting billions in the New York state pension fund, our movement has never shied away from taking on the fossil fuel industry — and we have won. We also know, the clock is ticking for business as usual on a livable planet. That's why we are setting our sights on the biggest lever there is to shut down fossil fuel finance:

The United States Federal Reserve Bank.

This is the BIGGEST fossil fuel finance campaign we've ever launched, and we're going to need your help. Can you make a contribution to launch our most ambitious campaign to push the Federal Reserve to do their job by turning our economy away from fossil fuels and an unlivable climate?

The Federal Reserve System (Fed) is the backstop of our economy. They are the bank of banks; the referee of the economy. When it comes down to the "money pipeline," not only do they have the legal authority to make fossil fuel finance more cumbersome (costly, less desirable), arguably the Fed could set limits on financing fossil fuels.

Like I said, this isn't the first time we're launching a campaign that many people in the climate movement thought was impossible. But while the Federal Reserve and the banks they regulate control all of the money, we have something even more powerful:

We have you. So while I don't usually ask, today I need to make an exception. Because we really can't win this campaign without you:

If you are able to make a contribution to help fund our campaign targeting the Federal Reserve Bank, it would mean a lot to me and to all of us here at 350.

I'm going to be a bit candid here with you:

I'm concerned about the amount of time we have left to turn things around for our planet. Already, the next generation of young people are experiencing harsher weather patterns than my generation. I have a son who is growing up in a world where catastrophic wildfires and unbreathable air are a part of "normal" daily life.

So at my core, I believe that the only way we are going to reverse course in time is if we go after the flows of money that keep corporations like Exxon, Shell, and BP alive. They are not going to stop fracking or drilling all of a sudden because it is the right thing to do. It is going to take an unprecedented climate movement to stop them.

I would not be writing to you today if I didn't think we could win. But I'm also not going to sugarcoat the scale and ambition it is going to take to pull this off. It's really going to take everyone in order to change everything.

So whether you have never donated to 350.org before — or any organization for that matter — or you are a recurring donor to 350 (thank you SO much, you rock!), anything you can chip in today will go a very long way to help jumpstart this campaign.

Over the next few months, I will keep you in the loop on the progress of our campaign and how you can continue getting involved.

Again, thank you for taking a moment to read what ended up being a rather long email from me. There's really no one else I'd rather be in this fight with.

In solidarity,

Brett Fleishman
