Friend,
Through the American Rescue Plan, the child tax credit will lift half of our country's children out of poverty. For families to receive the expanded child tax credit this year, you must file your taxes by the end of today, May 17.
The child care tax credit has helped over 100,000 families in my district, and I've heard from hundreds of parents how this tax credit has significantly impacted their families. Over 8,000 kids in my district will be lifted out of poverty. My good friend and fellow Connecticut Representative Rosa DeLauro has championed this issue for many years, and I'm thankful for her continued advocacy on behalf of all children and families.
Under the American Rescue Plan, a $3,600 credit is available for every child under six, and $3,000 is available for children from six to 17. Full-time college students under 25 can also qualify for up to $500. The money will be dispersed in monthly payments of up to $300 per child.
This credit will not affect a family's ability to qualify for or receive Medicaid, food stamps, Social Security income or any other benefit.
The difference this money will make as it goes directly into families' pockets means they will not have to choose between putting food on the table and paying bills. Throughout this entire pandemic, families have struggled the most and while we are on the way to recovery, we are not there yet. Democrats fought for this relief for families, and we will continue to put people first.
I encourage you to visit IRS.gov to learn more, and to file your taxes by the end of today to take advantage of the child tax credit this year.
