We're down to the wire. With your help, we have almost prevented the passage of Sen. Tom Whatley's SB 97, a proposal to reduce the authority of the governor to declare public health emergencies, but one day remains. This bill would limit the duration of public health emergencies and require legislative approval for their extension.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the independence of the Alabama Department of Public Health has made sure that science – not politics – guides decision-making about the best ways to protect Alabamians' health. As the pandemic makes clear, our legacy of underfunding public health is costing lives. We need to strengthen our investment in public health, not tie the hands of the governor and public health leadership.

This bill is ninth in line on the House calendar for Monday, the last day of the legislative session. Please contact your representative and urge them to vote NO on SB 97.
