Too many residents are living in fear and facing unresolved trauma.The time has come to face our trauma and address the root of these vicious crimes.

On September 30th, I hosted my annual State of the Ward (SOTW) summit. It was not a "Me standing before an audience making a speak" type of SOTW, rather it was a "for-the-people-by-the-people" approach type SOTW. Over 300 Ward 8 residents, community leaders and other stakeholders, broke into small groups and took a deep dive into 7 topics to find real and quantifiable solutions at curbing the violence plaguing Ward 8. ⁣The topics included:
* Community Engagement
* Workforce & Entrepreneurship
* Mentoring
* Financial Literacy/Home Acquisition
* Service Providers
* Trauma / Meditation / Mental Health
* Faith-Based

Each breakout group allowed participants to contribute their ideas in a way that was tactical, strategic and organized. My staff and I are already moving the ideas into action and formulating a strategic plan around the community's solutions brought to the forefront. ⁣

The conversation is not over. Join us on October 16th, 6:30 pm, at Department of Housing & Community Development, 1800 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE, Washington, DC, 20020, for the #StateoftheWard Part 2. This meeting will begin the process of actualizing the ideas and going into the community to do the wok. We need your help!

Thank you to the vendors who participated at the SOTW and the residents who were in attendance.

I will continue to serve the residents of the Great Ward 8! Don't just stand there, #DoSomething ([link removed]) !

** Trayon White to Ward 8 Residents: ‘Do Something’
------------------------------------------------------------

Instead of standing before a microphone and delivering a speech on his accomplishments, D.C. Council member Trayon White decided to employ another strategy for his recent State of the Ward address: He’d let his constituents do some work.

“A 30-minute speech doesn’t bring about the change that our ward needs,” White, a Ward 8 Democrat, told The Informer at his event that took place at the Bald Eagle Recreation Center in Southwest on Monday, Sept. 30. “People in this ward need to get involved in fighting our challenges. The people need to take on issues such as health, education, housing, public safety and budget equity. One person can’t do it alone.”

Bowser Administration Announces Historic Stagehand Apprenticeship Program
for District Residents Creative Economy Career Access Program

(Washington, DC) – The Bowser Administration announces the launch of the Creative Economy Career Access Program: Stagehand Apprenticeship (CECAP: Stagehand). This new on-the-job training program will offer underserved District of Columbia residents access to a first of its kind apprenticeship program, providing technical stagehand training, mentorship, and a pathway to union membership.

“We are excited to develop and establish this innovative Apprenticeship Program as a new pathway to the middle class for our creative community,” said Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment Director Angie M. Gates. “The program was developed as part of the 202Creates Initiative and is a testament to the Administration’s commitment to uplifting District residents and providing unique opportunities to establish sustainable careers in the creative economy.

The inaugural year of the CECAP: Stagehand Apprenticeship Program will administer two, six-month training cohorts. Each cohort will provide four District residents an immersive paid, on-the-job training and apprenticeship opportunity. The training provider for CECAP: Stagehand Apprenticeship Program is GLP DC, a professional staging and lighting services company based in Washington, DC for over three decades.

“GLP DC is excited to be a part of this exciting new program,” said Gary Pair, President of GLP DC. “The team at GLP DC looks forward to offering training, guidance and mentorship to District of Columbia residents that aspire to build careers as stagehand technicians.”

A stagehand is a creative technician that works backstage or behind the scenes at performance venues, theaters, soundstages, television studios, or convention centers. Stagehand work includes: rigging, scenic carpentry, props, lighting, sound/audio, audiovisual support, production design, drafting, and special
effects for performances, broadcasts, or special events. The national trade union for the stagehand craft is the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (or IATSE).

The District resident trainees will train at some of the most preeminent entertainment, special event, and sports venues in the District, including the Entertainment and Sports Arena, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the DC Armory, and DAR Constitution Hall.
