Let's get straight to the point: If we can't agree that racism really exists in America, then we have no hope of rooting it out of society. And new polling indicates that we have a lot of ground to make up on that first point.
According to a new poll by Leading Asian Americans to Unite for Change (LAAUNCH), 24% of white Americans don't believe anti-Asian racism is a problem that should be addressed. That is despite the fact that 8 in 10 Asian Americans say they have experienced discrimination.
The report also concluded that harmful, racist tropes remain stubbornly persistent in America. Stereotypes like the “model minority,” “perpetual foreigner,” and even concerns over “yellow peril” were cited as still highly prevalent by LAAUNCH's analysis.
This past year, we've witnessed a heartbreaking rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans. Our country needs to make an immediate and dramatic shift. It is completely unacceptable that so many white Americans are unaware of or indifferent to the plight of AAPI people. We are fighting every day to change that.
It's more vital than ever that we elect AAPI leaders to public office so that we can bring the plight of AAPI communities to the forefront of the policymaking process. Without AAPI people at the table when decisions are being made, there is little reason to expect that the government will ever be able to effectively help combat racism against our communities.
