I learned the power of community organizing on the streets of Little Village, John.
After my first year at college, I got involved in local organizing, fighting against injustices working and immigrant families faced in my neighborhood. Together, a group of us rooted out favoritism in Little Village’s youth employment programs and then later started negotiations with city officials for what eventually became the Latin American Community Center.
And then in 1981 at an awards ceremony, I met Harold Washington. That’s when my life changed. After I saved his life (that’s a story for another time) we quickly became friends — and I helped organize a rainbow coalition that united Brown and Black Chicagoans to elect the first Black mayor in our city’s history. Together we made monumental strides as we took on the Chicago machine and made real, progressive change for the Latino, Black, and other marginalized communities across Chicagoland.
And the movement continued to grow and I took our fight to Congress. Instead of fighting with my neighbors, I am now fighting shoulder to shoulder with my progressive colleagues from across the country to continue the work that started on the streets of Little Village.
But our progressive movement relies on grassroots donation from supporters like you, John — with our mid-month deadline approaching, can I count on you to donate $3 to keep our progressive movement going? I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important >>>
