Many elected officials make the mistake of not connecting with their residents during off-election years. But that’s not how we operate.

In 2019 and 2020, as a freshman member of Congress, I prioritized meeting constituents’ everyday needs, including setting up four neighborhood service centers in my district. I also ranked in the top 10 freshman lawmakers in hosting the most town hall meetings for constituents, and brought two congressional field hearings to my district so my colleagues in Congress could hear directly from people on the ground about housing and environmental justice.

Now, in my second term, and with allies in the U.S. Senate and White House, I’m focused on delivering real results for my residents and for millions of marginalized people across the country.

Already this year, I’ve introduced and passed two bills that remove credit barriers for millions of Americans and expand homeownership opportunities. I wrote these bills through many conversations with residents of my district who've expressed what they need.

A fatal mistake of many elected officials is not communicating with residents during non-election years. But not Rashida.

What we’re hearing is that people are having trouble affording housing; they’re concerned about a lack of investment in education for our youth; their mail delivery has been slowed down by Trump’s Postmaster General; access to affordable healthcare is increasingly out of reach; and that racist over-policing is making our communities less safe.

It’s these kinds of deep connections to her constituents’ needs that drive Rashida’s work in Congress and in her community.

We have a goal of making thousands of needs assessment calls this spring and summer to hear directly from Rashida’s constituents and ensure they’re receiving the services they need.

This is a non-election year, but in order to reach more residents, connect them with resources, and engage more people in the political process, we’ve kept more staff on the campaign than in the past.

Our organizing and political outreach isn’t slowing down just because Rashida isn’t on the ballot this year.

Staying rooted in community is why Rashida launched a campaign school and a youth fellowship this year through her newly-created Rooted in Community Leadership PAC―to train future leaders who are already giving back to their communities.
