Decertify police.

Friend –

Last year, our lawmakers failed to pass a commonsense law to decertify abusive police officers, which would improve public safety, and protect those who are disproportionately affected by police misconduct. The demands of advocates across the state like the community-led Let Us Live Coalition were ignored.

We cannot let this happen again. The fight continues this year with SB 2 (Bradford), the Kenneth Ross Jr. Police Decertification Act – named in honor of Kenneth Ross Jr., who was killed by a Gardena Police Department officer who has been investigated for multiple officer-involved shootings and yet remains on the force today.

SB 2 would bring California in line with the 46 other states that have a decertification process that would prevent officers who are fired for serious misconduct, including excessive force, sexual misconduct, and dishonesty like planting evidence or perjury, from being rehired by other law enforcement agencies.

Our lawmakers cannot continue to allow the police lobby to stand in the way of this bill – research has shown that abusive officers who move from department to department are more likely to incur complaints of serious misconduct.

We are proud to do this work with the Let Us Live Coalition, which includes the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color, Anti Police-Terror Project, Black Lives Matter California, California Families United 4 Justice, Communities United for Restorative Youth Justice, PolicyLink, STOP Coalition, and Youth Justice Coalition.

California must act now to decertify cops who abuse their power to terrorize our communities. Tell your legislator to support SB 2 to take dangerous, corrupt cops off our streets and make our communities safer. <[link removed]>

Thanks for taking action,
