Thanks to supporters like you, Democrats won incredible victories around the country in 2020, and we're reaping the benefits as President Biden's agenda works its way through Congress. However, in the places that we did lose, a picture of what awaits America if Republicans return to power is taking shape.
If you want proof, look no further than South Carolina.
South Carolina, now controlled by significant Republican majorities in the state legislature and a Trump-loyalist governor, has been passing regressive, far-right policies on a seemingly weekly basis. Since January, South Carolina Republicans have:
- Enacted a draconian fetal heartbeat abortion bill, effectively banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy
- Ended the payment of enhanced federal unemployment benefits that Congress intended to help out-of-work Americans survive the ongoing coronavirus pandemic
- Reinstated the firing squad as a legal means of execution in the state
These policies are part of a coordinated Republican attack on the rights and economic prosperity of South Carolinians. And this is what we can expect for the rest of the country if the GOP regains power in Congress.
Fortunately, there's good news for Democrats in South Carolina. Former Congressman Joe Cunningham just declared that he is running for governor in 2022. Cunningham has a bipartisan track record of flipping tough districts in South Carolina. We know we can get Joe Cunningham elected governor in 2022 if we start the work now.
