Four years ago, when the executives at Britain's "The Guardian" realized they needed new funding sources to sustain their newspaper, they considered instituting a paywall to charge for the online edition (as other dailies had done). While a paywall would bring in the necessary revenue, they realized it would deny "The Guardian"'s content to the millions who couldn't afford to pay.

Instead, they appealed to their readers.

Executives at "The Guardian" asked readers to donate to the paper so its content could remain free for all. More than a million responded enthusiastically, opting in for a monthly donation. Last May, after years of financial losses, "The Guardian" announced that its turnaround strategy succeeded and it is breaking even.

We know that just as readers of "The Guardian "appreciate its independent journalism, APN supporters appreciate the cogent, one-of-a kind weekly analysis offered by Israeli security expert Yossi Alpher.

Alpher writes his weekly Q and A analysis, "Hard Questions, Tough Answers", exclusively for Americans for Peace Now (most current edition is below). He's been doing it for 14 years, and we pay him for his unique expertise and brilliant writing.

Now we need your help. [ [link removed] ]

We don't want to put up a paywall. We want to continue to make Alpher's insights available to all. A one-time *donation [ [link removed] ]*, or if you can, a "Guardian"-style monthly *donation [ [link removed] ]* will enable us to continue bringing to you and many others the weekly dose of wisdom from one of Israel's leading strategic affairs experts.

*Please help to make that possible.* [ [link removed] ]

October 7, 2019 - Netanyahu between Primaries, Rotation, Elections, Indictment, and Iran [ [link removed] ]

Q. What has changed over the past two weeks in Israel's chaotic post-election scene?

A. Conceivably, Depending how you look at it, nothing at all--and a lot...

Q. Start with the bureaucratic paralysis. There is a new Knesset, right?

A. Yes, but without a new government based on 61 members...

Q. Netanyahu still has the mandate from President Rivlin to form a government?

A. As of the beginning of this week, that was the case. But Netanyahu has failed to recruit Blue and White to join a government of national unity led by himself...

Q. Is there a relative precedent here from the Ehud Olmert case?

A. Yes. In 2009 Prime Minister Ehud Olmert opted to resign the premiership...

Q. "Difficulty getting back on track" is an understatement...

A. We see derailing political systems in the US, UK, Israel and for that matter in Hong Kong...

Q. How do you assess the Rivlin and Netanyahu veiled warnings about looming security dangers that must be met on an emergency basis with national unity?

A. Note that Rivlin hoped to jolt the politicians into forming a unity government regardless of who leads it, while Netanyahu meant a unity government headed by himself...

Q. That seems indeed to justify a unity government, and sooner rather than later.

A. Obviously, these are circumstances in which it would be helpful for Israel's political leadership to stand at the head of a broad national-unity government...
