The Texas legislature is poised to pass one of the most extreme anti-aborition bills in the country, and Governor Greg Abbott is eagerly waiting to sign it.
Why are Republicans so excited about this bill?
It would bar abortions before most women even know they're pregnant -- including survivors of rape or incest. It will also “let nearly anyone -- including people with no connection to the doctor or the woman -- sue abortion providers, and those who help others get an abortion,” according to the Texas Tribune.
Texas State Rep. Donna Howard had a direct message to her Republican colleagues: “there have always been abortions and there always will be despite the obstructions that you're putting in place here. Despite the self-righteousness of valuing life over what I value … the lives of the women and families who have to make these decisions.”
The assault on our reproductive rights won't end in Texas, John. As the Texas Tribune further reports, “the bill's passage comes as conservative state houses across the country have tried to curtail abortion access, emboldened in part by the new conservative makeup of the Supreme Court.”
