Biden can halt fracking exports now. He needs to hear from you!
John,
A new kind of fracking threat has emerged in a big way: the export of Liquefied Natural Gas, or LNG. LNG is fracked gas that has been super-cooled to the extreme temperature of -260ºF, where it converts into a liquid state — and is highly explosive.
President Biden keeps talking about investing in clean energy infrastructure — but that won’t be good enough if he doesn’t put a stop to the LNG export boom, now. President Biden must use his authority to halt all liquid fracked gas exports.
There are seven LNG export terminals currently active in the U.S., but more than a dozen additional export terminals and liquefaction plants have been proposed or are under construction in Florida, New Jersey, Alaska and across the Gulf Coast. Each one poses serious risks to public safety, human health, air, water and climate.
LNG is classified as a hazardous material. Harmful air pollution is released in LNG processing, including benzene, mercury, ammonia, sulfuric acid and noxious particulate matter. And if the liquid gas leaks from the specialized, refrigerated containers it must be stored in, it can expand quickly into a toxic, explosive cloud.
People who live near LNG infrastructure like liquefaction plants and export terminals are at risk from the health and safety dangers of LNG. And about 40% of people who live within three miles of proposed LNG facilities are low-income or people of color — a highly disproportionate number. Urge President Biden to halt all LNG exports now!
Beyond the local impacts, ramping up U.S. exports of LNG would be a climate disaster. Right now, we have a domestic gas glut that’s making it harder for fracking companies to make a profit from selling fracked gas domestically. As a result, the industry desperately wants to open up more international markets so it can create more demand and justify more fracking (and increase its bottom line in the process).
LNG exports mean more fracking, which means more climate change. President Biden has the power to halt fracked gas exports — and he must act.
From extraction to end-use, the full life cycle of fracked LNG results in so much methane leakage and greenhouse gas emissions that LNG can be even worse for the climate than coal.
The climate crisis grows more serious by the day. We can’t afford to invest in any new fossil fuel extraction or infrastructure that threatens our air, water and clean energy future. To stop climate change, we need to ban fracking everywhere — including in our ports. President Biden must act to halt the export of LNG and all fracked gas!
