Hey John,
This weekend I was so honored to participate
in the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Day of Action in
Georgia.
One hundred years ago this month was the
Greenwood Massacre. Armed and deputized by city officials, racist
citizens destroyed more than 35 square blocks of Tulsa, Oklahoma,
that represented one of the most prosperous Black communities at
the time.
Sixty years ago this month, the Freedom
Riders kicked off their efforts to protest the continued
segregation of public buses — even after the Supreme Court ruled
it unconstitutional. They were arrested, or in many cases beaten
by mobs, for sitting in these illegally segregated buses.
And now today, 100 years later, 60 years
later, we are still fighting the same fights. But we’ve come a
long way, though we still have a long way to go.
That’s why I was happy to join alongside my
friends, neighbors, and activists like Martin Luther King Jr. III
this past weekend for a day of action in honor of John Lewis.
Together, we are committed to fighting
oppressive voter suppression laws. We are committed to
registering more voters to go to the polls. We are committed to
re-elect history-making leaders like Senator Raphael Warnock. But
we can’t do it without help from all across the nation. If you
can, will you pitch in $5, $10, $20 or whatever you can to keep
our fighting going?
