Last week, in collaboration with our community partners from Michigan Liberation, we launched the #FreeBlackWomxn campaign–a photo and storytelling project that elevates the voices of Black Michigan mothers who have experienced incarceration in support of the 2021 Black Mama’s Day Bailout. Learn more about the campaign in the Detroit Metro Times.

The carceral state has created a family separation crisis: 80% of women in jails nationwide are mothers. To learn more about how our criminal legal system targets, cages, and immiserates Black, Brown and poor women, check out Community Conversations: The Impact of the Cash Bail System on Black Women, a discussion co-hosted by Michigan LiberationMichigan Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Network, and Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lansing.

Contributions to the Black Mama’s Day Bailout are already being used to secure freedom for Michigan women. To learn more about the bailout, view our photo project, or make a donation to the bailout fund, visit www.freeblackwomxn.org.
