We’ve been saying that immigrants are essential, and Congress is getting the message, Friend. On Wednesday, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on creating a pathway to citizenship for immigrant essential workers. The hearing featured powerful testimony from Rose, a Haitian nurse in Rhode Island with temporary protected status (TPS), who spoke about her experience caring for patients with COVID-19. |

Immigrant essential workers are our nation’s unsung heroes. Whether caring for our most vulnerable, teaching our kids, or keeping us fed, millions of immigrants are putting themselves and their loved ones at risk while many of us stay safe at home. As Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) said during the Senate hearing: |
|
As part of our relief and recovery efforts, we must recognize immigrant essential workers by removing the uncertainty about their future and putting them on a pathway to citizenship. |

Like Rose said, “this country is my home.” For immigrant essential workers, home is here. This is our chance to make their belonging a reality. Congress must use whatever means possible to create a pathway to citizenship for them. Gracias, Marielena Hincapié Executive Director, National Immigration Law Center |
